Lessons from Antiquity Part 1: Angry Mobs

So who was the first female scientist in the Western Tradition?  Madame Curie? nope.....
try 4th century Alexandria resident Hypathia.

She taught mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy in Ancient Alexandria.  City named after the Egyptian Pharaoh Alexander the Great (among other awesome titles).  Basically she was killed by a Christian mob and torn to pieces. It looks like her death had more to do local politics vs 'teh Science'.... but either way... apparently this had something to do with the destruction of that Great Library of the Ancient world... the Library of Alexandria.

Yakuza give Quake Relief

(Image from dreadloki.com)

I found this on http://www.metafilter.com, apparently the Yakuza (japanese mafia) have been helping with relief efforts. Check out the story on the DailyBeast here.

The worst of times sometimes brings out the best in people, even in Japan’s “losers” a.k.a. the Japanese mafia, the yakuza. Hours after the first shock waves hit, two of the largest crime groups went into action, opening their offices to those stranded in Tokyo, and shipping food, water, and blankets to the devastated areas in two-ton trucks and whatever vehicles they could get moving. The day after the earthquake theInagawa-kai (the third largest organized crime group in Japan which was founded in 1948) sent twenty-five four-ton trucks filled with paper diapers, instant ramen, batteries, flashlights, drinks, and the essentials of daily life to the Tohoku region. An executive in Sumiyoshi-kai, the second-largest crime group, even offered refuge to members of the foreign community—something unheard of in a still slightly xenophobic nation, especially amongst the right-wing yakuza. The Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan’s largest crime group, under the leadership of Tadashi Irie, has also opened its offices across the country to the public and been sending truckloads of supplies, but very quietly and without any fanfare.

The Inagawa-kai has been the most active because it has strong roots in the areas hit. It has several "blocks" or regional groups. Between midnight on March 12th and the early morning of March 13th, the Inagawa-kai Tokyo block carried 50 tons of supplies to Hitachinaka City Hall (Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and dropped them off, careful not to mention their yakuza affiliation so that the donations weren't rejected. This was the beginning of their humanitarian efforts. Supplies included cup ramen, bean sprouts, paper diapers, tea and drinking water. The drive from Tokyo took them twelve hours. They went through back roads to get there. The Kanagawa Block of the Inagawa-kai, has sent 70 trucks to the Ibaraki and Fukushima areas to drop off supplies in areas with high radiations levels. They didn't keep track of how many tons of supplies they moved. The Inagawa-kai as a whole has moved over 100 tons of supplies to the Tohoku region. They have been going into radiated areas without any protection or potassium iodide.

As an aside... this particular line in the article made me laugh

A bit of background: Japan has 80,000 members belonging to these criminal organizations, which the police label shiteiboryokudan or literally “designated violent groups”; membership is not illegal although the police regulate their activities, much the way the SEC regulates Goldman Sachs. Their income is largely derived from protection money, security services, financial fraud, stock manipulations, gambling, blackmail, prostitution, and loan sharking.

My New Tattoo

My Ravana Tattoo

I had this piece done by Rob Farnham of Primal Piercing and Tattoo.
Rob was extremely professional, very clean, and really cool.  I'm extremely happy with my results and I think that if you live in the Fayetteville NC area and want something custom done, you should check out Primal Piercing and Tattoo located in Fayetteville NC.  If you look at Rob's work you can see that he has great artistic skill and execution.  Here is the Facebook Page for Primal Piercing, check out the photo album for some examples of Rob's other work. I particularly like the Pirate ship myself.

The piercer Dave is very experienced and I know for a fact that he has been piercing since 1996.

This establishment is clean and friendly, if anything stop in to take a look yourself.

drugs? LOL

Charlie Sheen - Hero of Hedonism

So the other day I saw someone post on yahoo answers this phrase that really stuck, Hero of Hedonism.
He's a hero of Hedonism with an Aegis shield of shaming deflection.  (that bit is my addition on twitter)

You know, no one really knows what's going on but I know that it is awesome. What is funny is the media seems to be predominantly dominated by the detractors. However, there is probably a large portion of guys and girls that think its hilarious and awesome. He does reflect an opinion divide that slices right down the middle I think. What is really interesting is if you take the theory that he's being completely  intentional about his 'performance' (I mean  he is getting paid to do Twitter after all) then he seems to have Loki-like rationalism.   Even if it's an unintentional consequence of the so called train wreck (he's probably been like this the whole time, just not under the microscrope) it's still interesting.

In a way, the character he plays in Two and a Half Men that  (some of) America loves, is really him just playing himself. (It was the most popular TV show after all) However, what we love when we suspend disbelief, some people hate when it becomes incarnate.  Either way, this article from the Telegraph was pretty good and I think worth a read.
Charlie Sheen is my hero. Not because he goes on five-day benders, takes binbags of drugs and cavorts with ladies of the night. That would be recklessly self-indulgent behaviour in anyone over the age of 21, never mind in a 45-year-old actor with a primetime TV job and a wife and children at home. No, he’s my hero because he refuses to allow his behaviour to be psychologised. He refuses to genuflect before the Oprahite altar of psychobabble and blame his antics on his “inner demons”. Instead he’s fighting like a terrier against experts’ attempts to brand him as “disordered” and in the process has made himself into a one-man army of resistance to the tyranny of therapy that has the twenty-first-century in its grip.
In a TV interview, ABC’s Andrea Canning asked Sheen if he was bipolar. When he said “no”, and hinted that some people (editor: this is to prevent against people insta-reacting and automatically reading 'some people' as 'all people') claim to be bipolar simply to excuse their erratic behaviour, she looked at him as if he was – in that other favoured phrase of the therapeutic industry – in denial.
Here is a list of 5 theories about mr. sheen.

Here is a article about why men love Charlie Sheen (aka he is teh awesome)

Nietzsche would be proud btw

Either way, if you think he's a hero of hedonism or an idiot that needs to go away, none of this would be possible if not for humanity's 'captivation with the interesting and the ugly'.  Wont for demand, we wouldn't be seeing this in the media. Imagine a tv series or movie about someone who has everything going right for them, full of beauty and lack of the ugly. This show would be the most boring piece of material never to see the silver screen.   There has to be some ugly to contrast the beauty against.

Thumbs up cat

Ok so holy crap... that cat has a thumb.... apparently this is called a Polydactyl Cat.

Here is the info from the wikipedia entry

However in some cases polydactyly appears to improve the dexterity of the animal. For example, a common variation with six toes on the front paws, with two opposing digits on each (comparable in use to human thumbs), enables the cat to learn and perform feats of manual dexterity generally not observed in non-polydactyl cats, such as opening latches or catching objects with a single paw.

Ok for even more thumbcat madness check out this website.

Gaddafi's Amazonian Guard

Apparently Gaddafi has an all female, lipstick wearing, trained to kill, bodyguard entourage.
Check it out here.

One commenter on this same story from another link mentioned that this looked like
Prince and the Revolution.
