Lessons from Antiquity Part 1: Angry Mobs




So who was the first female scientist in the Western Tradition?  Madame Curie? nope.....
try 4th century Alexandria resident Hypathia.

She taught mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy in Ancient Alexandria.  City named after the Egyptian Pharaoh Alexander the Great (among other awesome titles).  Basically she was killed by a Christian mob and torn to pieces. It looks like her death had more to do local politics vs 'teh Science'.... but either way... apparently this had something to do with the destruction of that Great Library of the Ancient world... the Library of Alexandria.
