So I came across this article from the American Spectator about the poor state of reading skills we have today. The numbers were staggering...

The low levels of literacy also aren't confined to the Peach State: Twenty-six percent of America's eighth-graders and one in three fourth-graders are functionally illiterate.

the part that caught my eye was this

then this particular statement

A four-decade war over whether reading instruction should emphasize phonics and spelling or Whole Language (a system by which students should learn the meaning behind sentences) has also fueled the literacy crisis. During the 1970s and 1980s, states embraced Whole Language and ignored phonics, forgetting that kids need to know how to also sound words. Only after states saw reading scores decline did they reverse course. Most reading experts argue that phonics and Whole Language are both needed in order to learn reading. But schools aren't doing a good job instructing in either area.

I was unfamiliar with the Whole Language approach, then after a little digging... apparently academics noticed that readers consumed entire words at a time, so they thought hey, we should teach kids to read whole words at a time (vs constructing them phonetically piece by piece).... this link on halcyon.org has a colorful description.
(as a hyperbolic example, if you learn by whole language you basically have to rote memorize all the words in the english language.... if you come to a word you 'don't' already and you didn't learn how to get hooked on phonics... you are probably fucked... lol)

then I came across this interesting article on the new american, about how the soviets originally tried the 'whole language method' back during the early years of Communism... then they ditched it in the 1930's because it sucked...... check that article out here.

Of the 1.6 million bachelor's degrees awarded in 2008–09, over 50 percent were concentrated in five fields: business (22 percent), social sciences and history (11 percent), health professions and related clinical sciences (8 percent), education (6 percent), and psychology (6 percent) (see table A-40-1). The fields of visual and performing arts (6 percent), engineering and engineering technologies (5 percent), communication and communications technologies (5 percent), and biological and biomedical sciences (5 percent) represented an additional 21 percent of all bachelor's degrees awarded in 2008–09.

Overall, there were 33 percent more bachelor's degrees awarded in 2008–09 than in 1998–99 (an increase of 401,100 bachelor's degrees awarded). Bachelor's degrees awarded in the field of parks, recreation, leisure, and fitness studies had the largest percent change of all fields (from 16,500 to 31,700 degrees, a 92 percent change). The next largest percent change was in the field of security and protective services (from 24,600 to 41,800 degrees, a 70 percent change). Education was the only field in which fewer bachelor's degrees were awarded in 2008–09 than in 1998–99 (a negative percent change of 5 percent).

About 57 percent of all bachelor's degrees conferred in 2008–09 were awarded to females, which was about the same as the percentage awarded to females in 1998–99. Looking at the five most prevalent bachelor's degree fields, females earned between 49 and 85 percent of the degrees awarded in those fields. In 2008–09, females earned the smallest percentages of bachelor's degrees relative to males in the fields of engineering and engineering technologies (16 percent of these degrees were awarded to females) and computer and information sciences and support services (18 percent female), both of which are considered STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. From 1998–99 to 2008–09, there were changes in the percentages of bachelor's degrees conferred to females in several fields of study. For example, of all the bachelor's degrees conferred in the field of security and protective services, the percentage that were conferred to females was 50 percent in 2008–09, compared with 43 percent in 1998–99. In contrast, of all the bachelor's degrees conferred in the field of computer and information sciences and support services, the percentage conferred to females was 18 percent in 2008–09, compared with 27 percent in 1998–99.

My friend Stephanie Liner linked this on Facebook, and I almost died laughing when reading this WSJ article. It talks about how more and more artists are using 'assistants to compose/compile/create' works that they are just adding their name to. I've heard of this happening with famous DJ's (picking tracks and having assistants or others do the actual mixing for the album recording). Or even famous photographers just using their assistants to do the captures etc. What is interesting is it's common to mention that some classical artists used assistants to complete their work, but they always say this in a tone that makes it seem like ALL of the great masters did. But if you look at say Caravaggio or Vermeer, arguably two of the greatest painters ever, those guys rolled pretty much solo. But helping is a far cry from doing ALL the work for you. Anyhow check this article out... I think this following excerpt and picture will give you an idea.

I think it would be more suitable if pieces were signed TEAM X vs One Dude in these cases. However the "Illusion of Authorship" is persistant in pretty much all products we buy these days. The difference though is art has the strongly embedded assumption that the 'artist' implies the creator.

At least with music the song writer is credited in print somewhere. It would be like your favorite recording artist selling a song that was written by someone else (which isn't that uncommon) but also sung and executed by some guy in Sri Lanka. At least Rebecca Black from Friday is actually using her own mouth.

Levels may range from 20 to 30 ppb in undisturbed soils. Quantities as small as 20 ppb may seem too trivial to consider. This is one of my favorite movie soundtracks. When they scored the film they decided to go with a continuous orchestral soundtrack. It plays through the entire movie and makes it feel like an epic opera.

Well apparently sometimes it works out ok.. Check out Mr. Mart Laar. The ex-prime minister of Estonia who as a young PM (he was 32 at the time) took the book Free To Choose by esteemed Economist Milton Friedman (and all around smart dude) and ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTED the concepts such as a flat tax and privatization. Perhaps he got lucky but this dude goes down in history as doing something crazy (apparently he met Margeret Thatcher and told her he was going to implement a flat tax and she said that he was a 'brave young man' to try to do that) and having it actually work.

Economic reforms

Estonia benefited from hindsight, in that its transition came two years after the transitions in the other former Soviet satellites of Central Europe. Estonia was able to implement many of their lessons while seemingly avoiding pitfalls.^[12] Three innovations to the study of economic transitions stand out:

Hybrid privatization. By combining the Hungarian and Treuhand models on the one hand, with the Czech voucher privatization program on the other, Estonia implemented a hybrid privatization system which was perceived as both just and efficient while avoiding the pitfalls of the earlier models. Laar’s director of privatization was Jaan Manitski, a Swede-Estonian and former manager of the Swedish pop group ABBA. His primary advisor on privatization was the German economist Herbert B. Schmidt^[13]
Flat tax. Estonia under Laar was the first country to implement a flat tax, which was partially emulated by some other countries, including Latvia, Lithuania, Russia,Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania and others. Russia, for example, dramatically increased tax collection revenues while slashing tax rates. Laar claims the only book on economics he had read before becoming prime minister at the age of 32 was Free to Choose by Milton Friedman,^[14] although according to his autobiography he is a Conservative, not a Libertarian.
Banking reform. Laar implemented harsh banking reform by encouraging the bankruptcy of banks suspected of having been taken over by the mafia. Though theInternational Monetary Fund at the time criticized this policy (as they did the Estonian policy of leaving the ruble zone in 1992), it was proven successful as Estonia did not suffer a banking crisis later as other transition countries did (even the Czech Republic). After 2000, the Yugoslavian reformers applied this same policy.

If you can't read it in the picture, it says... OCEAN ADVENTURE CHICKEN NUGGETS: Breaded Chicken Breast Patties with Rib Meat in WHALE & DOLPHIN SHAPES....

That just strikes me as great.... I almost wish it also had an added caption of "With that REAL Dolphin Taste!"

Of course I bought this and they taste delicious!

try 4th century Alexandria resident Hypathia.

She taught mathematics, philosophy, and astronomy in Ancient Alexandria. City named after the Egyptian Pharaoh Alexander the Great (among other awesome titles). Basically she was killed by a Christian mob and torn to pieces. It looks like her death had more to do local politics vs 'teh Science'.... but either way... apparently this had something to do with the destruction of that Great Library of the Ancient world... the Library of Alexandria.

Yakuza give Quake Relief

The worst of times sometimes brings out the best in people, even in Japan’s “losers” a.k.a. the Japanese mafia, the yakuza. Hours after the first shock waves hit, two of the largest crime groups went into action, opening their offices to those stranded in Tokyo, and shipping food, water, and blankets to the devastated areas in two-ton trucks and whatever vehicles they could get moving. The day after the earthquake theInagawa-kai (the third largest organized crime group in Japan which was founded in 1948) sent twenty-five four-ton trucks filled with paper diapers, instant ramen, batteries, flashlights, drinks, and the essentials of daily life to the Tohoku region. An executive in Sumiyoshi-kai, the second-largest crime group, even offered refuge to members of the foreign community—something unheard of in a still slightly xenophobic nation, especially amongst the right-wing yakuza. The Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan’s largest crime group, under the leadership of Tadashi Irie, has also opened its offices across the country to the public and been sending truckloads of supplies, but very quietly and without any fanfare.

The Inagawa-kai has been the most active because it has strong roots in the areas hit. It has several "blocks" or regional groups. Between midnight on March 12th and the early morning of March 13th, the Inagawa-kai Tokyo block carried 50 tons of supplies to Hitachinaka City Hall (Hitachinaka City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and dropped them off, careful not to mention their yakuza affiliation so that the donations weren't rejected. This was the beginning of their humanitarian efforts. Supplies included cup ramen, bean sprouts, paper diapers, tea and drinking water. The drive from Tokyo took them twelve hours. They went through back roads to get there. The Kanagawa Block of the Inagawa-kai, has sent 70 trucks to the Ibaraki and Fukushima areas to drop off supplies in areas with high radiations levels. They didn't keep track of how many tons of supplies they moved. The Inagawa-kai as a whole has moved over 100 tons of supplies to the Tohoku region. They have been going into radiated areas without any protection or potassium iodide.

As an aside... this particular line in the article made me laugh

A bit of background: Japan has 80,000 members belonging to these criminal organizations, which the police label shiteiboryokudan or literally “designated violent groups”; membership is not illegal although the police regulate their activities, much the way the SEC regulates Goldman Sachs. Their income is largely derived from protection money, security services, financial fraud, stock manipulations, gambling, blackmail, prostitution, and loan sharking.
